The Octopus

octopus-chessThe Karpov – Kasparov World Chess Championship battles of the 1980’s left a deep impression on me during my teenage years.  I was utterly captivated by this mysterious and intriguing duel between the Soviet Union’s greatest ever players.

Game 16 of their 1985 match was particularly extraordinary. Kasparov, with a dramatic pawn sacrifice, eventually left Karpov in a completely paralysed position, inflicted primarily by the black knight lodged on the d3 square.
